The Land of Elephants & Baobabs

Often called the "hidden gem" of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, Tarangire National Park offers a completely different visual landscape to the Serengeti. Dominated by massive, ancient Baobab trees that pierce the skyline and dotted with giant termite mounds, Tarangire feels like a prehistoric wilderness.

The park's lifeblood is the Tarangire River, which cuts across the landscape. During the dry season, it becomes the only permanent water source in the entire region — pulling in thousands of animals and creating the second-highest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania.

"Standing under a 1,000-year-old baobab while a herd of 300 elephants drinks at the river below — Tarangire is Tanzania's most underrated wonder."

Where is Tarangire National Park Located?

Tarangire is located in northern Tanzania, roughly 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Arusha — just a 2-hour drive on a fully paved tarmac highway. It is the closest major national park to Arusha, making it the perfect first stop on the Northern Circuit.

The park connects naturally with Lake Manyara National Park to the north and private Wildlife Management Areas to the east — positioning it as an ideal launchpad before heading onwards to Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.

The Tarangire Mini-Migration

While the Serengeti has its famous wildebeest trek, Tarangire hosts its own spectacular localised dry-season migration. Knowing the seasons makes a massive difference in what you will see.

Peak Dry Season — Tarangire
July – October

The River Drama — Peak Season

The absolute best time to visit. As the surrounding Maasai Steppe dries up completely, over 250,000 migratory animals — wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and elands — flee to the park to drink from the permanent Tarangire River. Elephant herds congregate in groups of up to 300.

  • 250,000+ migratory animals converge on the river
  • Elephant herds of up to 300 at the water's edge
  • Peak predator action — lions, leopards, cheetahs
  • Best overall wildlife density in the park
Short Rains — Tarangire
November – December

Short Rains — The Dispersal Begins

Short rains fill the seasonal waterholes outside the park. The large herds of plains game begin dispersing back into the broader ecosystem. The landscape turns a brilliant lush green, and bird-watching becomes absolutely phenomenal.

  • Landscape turns brilliant lush green
  • Over 500 bird species — prime birding window
  • Plains game begin dispersing outward
  • Fewer vehicles — excellent shoulder season value
Green Dry Spell — Tarangire
January – March

Green Dry Spell — Low Crowds

A brief dry period where the park is incredibly beautiful, quiet, and filled with resident wildlife. Tourist crowds are significantly lower than in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro — offering a highly exclusive, peaceful safari feel at very competitive prices.

  • Resident elephants, lions and buffalo remain year-round
  • Lowest tourist volumes in the Northern Circuit
  • Beautiful dry-green landscape post-short rains
  • Ideal for couples and exclusive private safaris
Long Rains — Tarangire
April – May

Long Rains — Emerald Wilderness

The park receives heavy rainfall, transforming it into a lush emerald jungle. Some unpaved tracks can be muddy, but this is the prime time for budget travellers looking for rock-bottom accommodation rates and absolute solitude in the wilderness.

  • Dramatic lush jungle transformation
  • Lowest prices of the year — budget safari gem
  • Total solitude — minimal other vehicles
  • Some dirt tracks may be muddy — 4x4 essential

What Our Tarangire Guests Say

★★★★★ 4.9 / 5 from verified reviews
"

"I have been on safari in Kenya and South Africa. Nothing prepared me for standing under a 1,000-year-old baobab while a herd of 200 elephants drank from the river below us. Tarangire is in a different league."

"

"The night drive from our concession lodge was the single best wildlife experience of our lives. We spotted a leopard with a kill in a baobab tree and three different genets. Larema's choice of camp was perfect."

"

"We came in July for the dry season and counted over 400 elephants in one afternoon. The baobab landscape is unlike anything else on earth. This is not just a safari — it is a journey back in time."

SECTION 08

Frequently Asked Questions

Tarangire is famous for its massive baobab trees and jaw-dropping elephant population, whereas the Serengeti is defined by wide-open treeless grass plains and the Great Wildebeest Migration. Tarangire feels much more enclosed, woody, and prehistoric — a completely different sensory experience.
Yes! Tarangire is home to one of the largest concentrations of elephants in Africa. Even during the wet season when some animals wander outside the borders, thousands of elephants remain resident in the park year-round.
Not quite. You will easily see huge numbers of Elephants, Cape Buffalo, and Lions. Leopards are present but require a sharp eye in the baobab branches. However, there are no Black Rhinos in Tarangire. To complete your Big Five, pair Tarangire with a trip to the Ngorongoro Crater.
Tarangire does have pocketed wooded areas where tsetse flies live. They have a painful bite but are generally just a nuisance. To protect yourself, avoid wearing dark blue or black clothing (which strongly attracts them) and stick to neutral khaki, olive green, or light tan safari colours.
Night drives and walking safaris are not permitted inside the national park boundaries. However, staying in a private concession just outside the main gate unlocks both — night drives to spot leopards and bushbabies, and ranger-led walking safaris to track elephants and learn ancient bushcraft.
