Often called the "hidden gem" of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, Tarangire National Park offers a completely different visual landscape to the Serengeti. Dominated by massive, ancient Baobab trees that pierce the skyline and dotted with giant termite mounds, Tarangire feels like a prehistoric wilderness.
The park's lifeblood is the Tarangire River, which cuts across the landscape. During the dry season, it becomes the only permanent water source in the entire region — pulling in thousands of animals and creating the second-highest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania.
"Standing under a 1,000-year-old baobab while a herd of 300 elephants drinks at the river below — Tarangire is Tanzania's most underrated wonder."

Tarangire National Park, Tanzania
Tarangire is located in northern Tanzania, roughly 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Arusha — just a 2-hour drive on a fully paved tarmac highway. It is the closest major national park to Arusha, making it the perfect first stop on the Northern Circuit.
The park connects naturally with Lake Manyara National Park to the north and private Wildlife Management Areas to the east — positioning it as an ideal launchpad before heading onwards to Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.
While the Serengeti has its famous wildebeest trek, Tarangire hosts its own spectacular localised dry-season migration. Knowing the seasons makes a massive difference in what you will see.
The absolute best time to visit. As the surrounding Maasai Steppe dries up completely, over 250,000 migratory animals — wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and elands — flee to the park to drink from the permanent Tarangire River. Elephant herds congregate in groups of up to 300.
Short rains fill the seasonal waterholes outside the park. The large herds of plains game begin dispersing back into the broader ecosystem. The landscape turns a brilliant lush green, and bird-watching becomes absolutely phenomenal.
A brief dry period where the park is incredibly beautiful, quiet, and filled with resident wildlife. Tourist crowds are significantly lower than in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro — offering a highly exclusive, peaceful safari feel at very competitive prices.
The park receives heavy rainfall, transforming it into a lush emerald jungle. Some unpaved tracks can be muddy, but this is the prime time for budget travellers looking for rock-bottom accommodation rates and absolute solitude in the wilderness.
These massive trees can live for over 1,000 years. Guides love to point out the hollow trunks and the deep scars left by elephants stripping bark for water during droughts — nature's living history books.
Illegal inside the national park, but a major draw from the neighbouring private concessions. Spot elusive nocturnal hunters — leopards, bushbabies, genets, and owls — under a blazing star-filled sky.
A massive wetland system in the park's south that acts as a haven for over 500 bird species — the most recorded anywhere in Tanzania. An absolute must for any serious birder visiting East Africa.
Tarangire is the most accessible of all Tanzania's major parks — just 2 hours from Arusha on a fully paved road.
Travel on a smooth, fully paved tarmac highway from Arusha directly to the main park gate. It is a comfortable ride that makes Tarangire the most affordable and accessible park in the Northern Circuit to reach.
Hop on a brief charter flight from Arusha Airport (ARK) straight to Kuro Airstrip located right in the centre of Tarangire. Ideal if you are flying directly onward to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro next.
Choose between staying inside the park (early morning drives, wilderness immersion) or in private concessions outside the gate (night drives, walking safaris, better value).
Best for early gate departures, uninterrupted wilderness, and watching elephants walk past your deck at sundowner hour.
Private Wildlife Management Areas just outside the main gate — where night drives, walking safaris, and excellent budget flexibility are all possible.

"The night drive from our concession lodge was the single best wildlife experience of our lives. We spotted a leopard with a kill in a baobab tree and three different genets. Larema's choice of camp was perfect."
"We came in July for the dry season and counted over 400 elephants in one afternoon. The baobab landscape is unlike anything else on earth. This is not just a safari — it is a journey back in time."
