The Emerald Gem of the Rift Valley

Ernest Hemingway famously described Lake Manyara as "the loveliest I had seen in Africa," and it is easy to see why. Nestled dramatically at the base of the sheer, 600-metre Great Rift Valley escarpment, this compact park packs an unbelievable amount of ecological diversity into a small space.

Nearly two-thirds of the park is covered by the shimmering alkaline waters of the lake itself, while the remaining land holds a tapestry of habitats — from dense jungle-like groundwater forest, through open acacia woodlands, to wide salty floodplains. From its legendary tree-climbing lions to its chaotic baboon troops, Manyara offers a lush dramatic contrast to the wide-open savannahs of the Serengeti.

"Lake Manyara is not just a park — it is a curtain-raiser. It sets the stage for everything wild and extraordinary that Tanzania is about to show you."

Where is Lake Manyara Located?

Lake Manyara is located in northern Tanzania, roughly 125 kilometres (78 miles) west of Arusha — a comfortable 2–2.5 hour drive on fully paved roads. It sits nestled at the foothills of the highland gateway town of Karatu.

Because it sits directly on the main safari highway connecting Tarangire National Park to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, it acts as the perfect geographical stepping stone — an ideal introductory stop or a relaxing half-day addition to any Northern Circuit road trip.

The Seasons of Water & Wings

Wildlife viewing is excellent year-round thanks to the permanent underground water supply. But the appearance of Lake Manyara changes dramatically with the rains — from pink flamingo spectacles to big mammal gatherings.

Wet Season — Lake Manyara
November – June

The Flamingo Feast & Canoeing

The best time for scenic beauty, dramatic photography, and birdwatching. Rainwater fills the lake basin, drawing hundreds of thousands of migratory lesser flamingos that tint the shoreline a brilliant pink. Water levels rise high enough to permit specialised boat safaris, and the groundwater forest becomes an intensely lush vibrant green jungle.

  • Hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos line the shore
  • Canoe & boat safaris possible on the lake
  • Groundwater forest at its most lush and vibrant
  • 400+ bird species — prime photography window
Dry Season — Lake Manyara
July – October

The Big Mammal Gathering

The alkaline lake recedes significantly, leaving behind wide grassy floodplains. Animals — including large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and wildebeest — migrate out of the drying surrounding steppe and congregate predictably along the remaining fresh-water rivers. The bush thins out, making large predators much easier to spot.

  • Large elephant, buffalo, and giraffe herds at the rivers
  • Thinning bush makes predator spotting far easier
  • Tree-climbing lions most reliably found in dry season
  • Peak mammal viewing — excellent game drive conditions

Searching for Tree-Climbing Lions

While lions occasionally climb trees elsewhere, Manyara's prides are globally famous for draping themselves over low-slung acacia branches to escape the ground heat. Spotting them overhead is one of Africa's most unusual wildlife sights.

What Our Manyara Guests Say

★★★★★ 4.9 / 5 from verified reviews
"

"We arrived at dawn and immediately found two lions asleep in an acacia tree directly above the road. I had to check I was not dreaming. Manyara surprises you in ways the other parks simply cannot."

"

"The pink flamingos stretched for kilometres along the shoreline — it looked like the lake was on fire. Larema timed our visit perfectly for the wet season. The treetop walkway was a brilliant bonus on top."

"

"I did the mountain biking tour through Mto wa Mbu in the morning then the forest game drive in the afternoon. Manyara is so much more than just a quick stop — it deserves at least two days. Absolutely loved it."

SECTION 08

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. The Serengeti is characterised by massive, open, dry grass plains. Lake Manyara offers the exact opposite: a dense emerald jungle forest, a massive alkaline lake, towering volcanic cliffs, and flamingo-pink shorelines. It provides an essential change of scenery that makes your overall safari feel diverse and complete.
No. You will see plenty of Elephants, Cape Buffalo, and Lions (often in trees), and Leopards are highly active in the dense groundwater forest. However, there are no Black Rhinos inside Lake Manyara. You will need to stop at the nearby Ngorongoro Crater to complete your Big Five.
Lake Manyara is home to the highest concentration of olive baboons in Africa. As soon as you drive through the main gates, you will be surrounded by massive troops numbering several hundred individuals — playing, grooming, and foraging right along the forest tracks. It is an incredibly entertaining introduction to the park.
It is a shallow, alkaline (salt) lake with no outlets. While fed by fresh-water underground streams off the volcanic highlands, the high evaporation rate concentrates volcanic minerals over thousands of years. This unique chemistry creates the perfect environment for blue-green algae — the primary food source for thousands of pink flamingos.
A single full-day or even half-day game drive (4–6 hours) is typically enough to explore the main tracks. Most travellers arrive in the morning, enjoy a morning game drive, have a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, and head up to Karatu or Ngorongoro by late afternoon.
